LANGUAGES FOR LIFE
S3 COURSE
This course is aimed specifically at pupils who have found language learning a challenge and who would benefit from a course to help them improve their overall literacy levels.
WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?
wHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE?
Everyone will be studying a language in S3. Language is at the core of thinking. Learners reflect, communicate and develop ideas through language. The course provides learners with the opportunity to develop skills in listening and talking, reading and writing, which are essential for learning, work and life, to use different media effectively for learning and communication and to develop understanding of how language works.
The study of a modern language has a unique contribution to make to the development of cultural awareness, as it provides learners with a means of communicating directly with people from different cultures, enhancing their understanding and enjoyment of other cultures and of their own. They gain insights into other ways of thinking and other views of the world, and therefore develop a much richer understanding of active citizenship.
This course uses a variety of approaches to support learners in improving their literacy skills. Pupils will get the opportunity to study French, German and Spanish. As well as covering many of the second level Modern Languages Experiences and Outcomes, pupils have the opportunity to consolidate their English grammar. In addition, pupils look at European culture and Scotland’s place within Europe.
Throughout the course, pupils work towards a National 2 Life in another Country unit in all three languages as well as the Languages for Life and Work Award in French. At the end of the course, pupils will receive certification from the SQA.
