SfW Laboratory Skills

SCQF LEVEL 5 - National 5

The course provides an introduction to laboratory science.

 

There are 4 units.

  • Unit 1: Careers using laboratory science. You will explore a variety of industries and career opportunities in science laboratories, locally, nationally, and globally.

  • Unit 2: Working in a laboratory.  You will develop basic practical skills and knowledge needed for working in a laboratory: measuring, weighing and preparing compounds and solutions; and health and safety requirements.

  • Unit 3: Practical Skills.  You will learn skills in microbiology, measuring radioactivity, chemical handling and laboratory instrumentation.

  • Unit 4: Practical Investigation.  You will work with others to produce a plan to undertake a practical investigation to test scientific hypotheses. This will also involve reporting of the results, conclusions and evaluations of the investigation.

5 periods per week

COURSEWORK

Course evidence gathered throughout in open-book conditions and a full practical investigation carried out and written up.
