WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?

wHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE?

National 5 Mathematics provides pupils with skills which are helpful in other school subjects and which will be important for everyday life, now and in the world of work.  This course helps pupils to learn to appreciate mathematics and understand it’s importance in today’s world.  For many further education courses this is a compulsory subject for entry and employers very often require job applicants to have a qualification in maths.

Pupils will cover a variety of topics under the headings of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Numeracy.  The emphasis is very much on using mathematical techniques to solve real life problems.  Weekly homework serves the purpose of consolidating key techniques and processes.

The two core textbooks are TeeJay Book 5 and Leckie & Leckie National 5

STUDENT STORIES

Information from pupils who have studied this course as to how they feel it was.

Catherine - S4

I like maths because the work you do in class challenges you to work outside of your comfort zone.  I find the workload in class manageable and you constantly have work to do which is helpful.  There is a good balance of homework also to help you understand more.

Math and Geometry Tools

James - S4

National 5 maths is good as it builds on the things you have learned in S3 and puts it into real life situations and you also learn new things that you haven’t done before.  It is fun and teaches you the things you will need later on in maths as well as skills you use in other subjects like Physics
