NPA Applied Sciences
SCQF LEVEL 5
This National Progression Award (NPA) provides an overview of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sector. It develops knowledge and understanding of biology, chemistry and physics. It will also develop science practical skills.
The nature of the course allows teachers to;
-
Assess and award individual science units achieved at pupils' own pace

Recognise and award core skills in addition to science units
Pupils can take Science NPAs in every year from S3-S6 and continue to make progress by attaining new qualifications based on their unique skills, interests and abilities. This course allows progression from the Level 4 NPA in Science and Health but can be taken by anyone in S5 and 6 who has found discrete N5 courses more challenging but wants to continue with a Science.

You will develop knowledge and understanding of biology, chemistry and physics. You will also develop science practical skills to enable progression. Science NPA is the best course choice for you if you want to study science at college or hope to work in a science related job in future.
wHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE?
Course content includes four units with options in each:-
· Cell Biology OR Introductory Biology
· Chemical Changes and Structure OR Chemistry Fundamentals
· Physics: Waves and Radiation OR Introductory Physics
· Forensic Science: Applications OR Laboratory Science: Practical Skills
Your teacher is likely to choose which topic you will do for each option but there may be opportunity to personalise.
All topics and units are assessed internally, in class by a combination of;
· Practical work, experiments and investigations
· Open and closed book questions or tests

Level 4 NPA Award, National 4 in Biology Chemistry or Physics or Units passes at N5 Biology Chemistry or Physics.
WHAT WILL YOU GET?
By choosing this science NPA, you will continue to develop your scientific practical skills, knowledge of science in everyday life and safe working practices. You can achieve a mixture of science unit passes and if you pass all four you will gain a National Progression Award (NPA) in Applied Sciences at SCQF level 5.
