National 4
For the past 3 years we have taken part in ‘Discovering China’, an innovative project run by The Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools in partnership with SCILT (Scotland's National Centre for Languages). We have had a great deal of success with S5 & S6 pupils who have taken part and are now pleased to be able to open up our offer to all S5/6 pupils as one of your main choices.
This project will give learners the chance to be accredited by SQA for National 4 Mandarin (simplified). The courses will also encourage candidates to explore aspects of Chinese culture as well as providing a solid linguistic foundation for learning the world’s most spoken language.

WHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE?
The lessons will be delivered by a GTCS teacher of Mandarin and live streamed into your classroom. You will therefore need your Glow password, access to the internet, a screen, audio and a projector.
You will be taught language so that you can get by in a simple Mandarin conversation and be able to read and listen to some basic information. In addition you will learn about various aspects of Chinese culture.
There will be no exam for this course, and instead you will complete short unit assessments in the four skills of reading, listening, talking & writing.

There are no entry requirements for this course, it is available to any S5/6 pupil who is interested in learning about the language and Chinese culture.
This may be an ideal course for an S6 pupil looking to maximise their outcomes by broadening their experience.
It may also be a suitable option for those S5/6 pupils for whom sitting exams in every subject may not be suitable.
WHAT WILL YOU GET?
A National 4 qualification in Mandarin.
Should find the full course too challenging, you may be able to achieve SCQF units at Level 4.
