Health and Food Technology focuses on health and the nutritional properties of food as well as developing safe, hygienic and informed practices in food preparation. It raises learners’ awareness of the importance of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. The course also develops learners’ knowledge and skills so they can become informed consumers. 

This course is different to the Practical Cookery course and comprises of 3 units - Food for Health, Food product developmebnt and Contemporary Food issues. Only 2 of the 5 periods will be in the kitchens.

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?

The course will suit you if you have an interest in health, food and consumer issues. Through a mixture of independent and collaborative learning the knowledge and skills developed will prepare you for decisions required in learning, life and work. 

 

You will have the opportunity to be creative when researching, producing and testing your own food product to meet a specific brief. 

In order to achieve the units and outcomes, candidates will complete a range of activities to:

  • explain the food product development process

  • explain the relationship between food, health and nutrition

  • carry out an investigation into the diet and health needs of the target group

  • carry out an investigation into factors affecting the food choice of the target group

  • consider environmental issues that could affect consumer food choice

  • generate ideas for a food product based on the information gathered

  • explain how the food product meets the needs of the brief

  • explain how the functional properties of ingredients will affect the food product

  • describe how technological developments affect a consumer’s choice of foods

  • explain how food labelling can help a consumer to make informed choices

  • describe the role of consumer organisations

  • make a food product that is suitable for the brief following safe and hygienic practices

  • carry out a sensory evaluation of the food product

  • evaluate the food product in respect of the brief

This is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher but pupils would be expected to have attained one or more of the following:

 

• A level 4 Secure in Home Economics

EMPLOYMENT

Most careers will benefit from your experience in Health and Food Technlogy. Specifically, a career in catering, dietician, nutritionist, budget analysis, childcare, chefs and head cooks. 

 

Some of the employability skills which are developed through practical cookery are: 

Planning and Organisation: 

During your practical tasks you will have to prepare ingredients and a food plan accordingly. Ensuring your workstation is kept clean and organised. 

Problem Solving: 

Working independently and demonstrating resilience in order to counter any issues you may need to resolve. 

Time Management: 

In order to follow a recipe, you will learn how to manage your time appropriately and multitask when necessary.
